PREPARATION

Before starting, you ensure your hands and nails are well cleaned. File your nails if necessary, so that there are no snags. By doing this you prevent damages on the face and risk of infection.

Always work using clean materials (sponges, brushes, spatulas, water bowls) and change the water regularly.

Get the subject to put on any clothes beforehand that have to be put on over the head. Protect your models clothing with a hairdressing cape or a towel. You can also use an old shirt for this: put it on your model back to front and cut off the sleeves to the right length.

If you are going to be painting several children, have them sit on high stools, preferably with backs. A proper working posture prevents back complaints.

Hint: children like to be able to watch their face being painted in the mirror. This will generally ensure they are less easily distracted and are more likely to sit still.

APPLYING A BASE

If the skin is dry or sensitive, than apply a thin layer of Grimas Under Make-up Base: a non-greasy cream with a caring effect. Let the skin absorb it for a few minutes before you start working on the skin with Cake or Water Make-up, thus ensuring that the product has been fully absorbed into the skin.

If children have skin irritation or small cuts on their faces, you can also do the painting on the hand.
The shape, width and quality of the brush are to a great extent qualifying the effect you can achieve with it. For instance, round brushes are ideal for making curves and drawing curls. You draw straight lines preferably with a flat brush, keeping the handle of the brush pointed in the direction of the line. To draw a thin line, you do not necessarily need to use a narrow brush. You can also use the edge of a flat brush for that. This brush is also very convenient for making a thick line merge into a thin one, turning the brush on its side in one fluid action as you go automatically changes the line from thick to thinner. When you come to the end of a line, lift the brush from the skin in a single smooth movement.
Hint: to make beautiful, thin lines, you mix the Water Make-up with Cleansing Lotion instead of water.

WATER MAKE-UP

Grimas Water Make-up (Pure) is an unperfumed, gluten-free water-based make-up, intended for face-painting and body-painting.
Pure means that the product in question does not contain any chemical preservatives (such as parabens) or halogenated organic compounds.

Water Make-up works just like watercolour paint. The best way to apply Grimas Water Make-up (Pure) and Water Make-up Pearl Pure is to use a brush. Use the brush and a little water to soften the make-up and make it a bit pasty. Test the colour intensity on the hand. Don't work too dry, but do not use too much water. Grimas Water Make-Up (Pure) can be used around the eyes, but children often do not like it when brushes are so close to the eyes.

When working under the eyes, have your model look upwards - only with the eyes, without moving the head.
If you work above the eyes (eyelid), have your model close his/her eyes in a relaxed manner. Children are inclined to shut their eyes tight. Then you can say: keep your eyes closed as if you are sleeping.

Black eye: apply blue Grimas Water Make-up (Pure) to the corner of the eye and some red make up on the sunken areas. Blend the colours into each other. You can tone down the colours with yellow Water Make-up (Pure).

Graze: rub a Grimas Stoppel Sponge over the red Water Make-up (Pure) and smear stripes onto the face.

Hint: if there are multiple scratches in a graze, make sure that they are parallel to each other to create a believable effect.

Rinse out the Stubble Sponge, rub it back and forth on the black Water Make-up (Pure), then wipe the sponge over the red stripes.
If you do not want the colours to mix, be sure to wait for the first layer to dry before applying another colour over it or up against it.

You make the 'nosebleed' with red Water Make-up (Pure).

Cut: draw a thin, straight, black line. Under the line, paint on blood that seems to be dripping down, using red Water Make-up (Pure).

General tip: Water Make-up can be used to add (additional) colour to the hair and eyebrows, provided that the hair is not permed, bleached or dyed. Use a toothbrush to do this.

Hair that has been coloured using Water Make-up (Pure) can be washed with shampoo.

Hint: stick a plaster over a 'wound'.
REMOVING THE PRODUCTS

You can lightly wash the skin with lukewarm water and soap (or shampoo) to already remove a great part. Massage it in briefly and rinse off with lukewarm water. Scrubbing too much with water and soap or shampoo can irritate the skin. You can clean the skin further if required with a cleansing milk or cleansing cream. Massage it in gently and remove it with a soft tissue.

Do not use Afschmink, as this contains waxes and oils which actually adhere the Water Make-up to the skin.
Do not use ready-to-use cleansing cloths.

If a trace of colour is left on the skin, it can be removed with Grimas Cleansing Lotion. If the skin feels dry after cleaning, you can apply a care cream.

CLEANSING CREAM / SKINCARE CREAM = Cleansing Cream
CLEANSING LOTION = Cleansing Lotion
If Water Make-up gets onto clothing, rinse it out under a tap. Leave the item of clothing to soak in water containing a pre-wash (Biotex). Then wash it by hand or put it in the washing machine.
CLEARING UP THE MATERIALS

If necessary, rinse the Water Make-up clean and wipe the surfaces of the colours dry with clean tissues. Let the make-up dry out in the air and only put the lid back on when the Water Make-up is dry. Store it in a dry and cool place until the next time you use it.

The sponges are disposable so you can throw them away after use. If you do want to reuse them, first rinse them under the tap with some soap or shampoo or wash them in the washing machine (in a net bag or pillow case), set to at least 60°C.

You can clean brushes with water and soap or shampoo. Put the moist hairs of the brushes back into shape by hand after washing. Dry the brushes lying flat on a towel and do not place them upright, since that causes the moisture to run down into the shaft.
